Integrating Powerline technology in Passenger Information System devices allows to provide new services to comply with new passenger needing or new security circulation rules. A real case of a Passenger Emergency Intercom subsystem with Passenger Intercom Units and Train Driver Handsets with integrated Powerline modules is presented.
This paper describes as well some applications on high speed and regional fleets and identifies some standard topologies for Point-to-Point train coupling and Bus PIS services.
Special focus is placed on analysis of standard railway existing cables, connectors and train couplers to carry out and identify maximum communication data rate (Mbps) in different scenarios of train length and number of coaches. In addition to the hardware part the software part with network OSI model layers is described and different implementations are suggested.
The aim is to show the benefit of Powerline solution on rolling stock applications and provide also it’s compliance to railway standards.
